We Show You How Our Showreel Course Can Jump-Start Your Acting Career
A showreel is one of the most important tools an actor can wield when looking to secure acting. Also known as a “demo reel” or “sizzle reel,” a showreel is a short video that showcases your best acting work, such that casting directors and agents can quickly get a feel for who you are as an actor.
It goes without saying that any aspiring actor requires a professional headshot and a well-crafted resume, but a showreel is what takes the words and images on a page and makes them real. Having a professionally-produced showreel to submit to agents, producers and casting directors is an important way for actors to showcase who they are, what they’re capable of, and whether they might be the right person for the job.
In our in-depth guide, we will give you everything you need to know about our Showreel course and more, here is what you’ll discover:

What is a Showreel Course?
A showreel course is a program that teaches students about the fundamentals of how to create an acting showreel, as well what separates a strong acting showreel from a poor one. It usually culminates in the professional production of one such showreel for the student.
There is much more to the Screenwise Showreel Course than simply learning about what goes into a great showreel. Students also learn the fundamentals of screen acting; elements such as improvisation and how to convey emotions, for example. Equally as important, participants also learn how to effectively sell themselves to agents, producers and casting directors. Networking and self-promotion is an important part of any actor’s success, and as such it is integrated into the Screenwise Showreel Course.
Why Study With Screenwise?
Sydney, Australia-based Screenwise was the first to recognise the need for a drama school specifically designed to teach the art of screen acting by offering access to award-winning tutors with extensive industry experience.
Our Showreel Course is recognised as Australia’s most comprehensive showreel course for actors and the only program of its kind. Unlike courses from other schools, our course provides more than just a professional-quality showreel that is shot on location by professional directors.
You’ve likely heard the saying that “it’s not just what you know, it’s who you know.” Nowhere does that ring truer than in acting, and students studying at Screenwise are given privileged access to influential figures within the television and film industries. It’s an advantage that’s second to none.
Meet the Leadership & Tutors
To be the best, you have to learn from the best. Screenwise prides itself in offering its students access to some of the most prominent industry working and award-winning actors, directors, casting directors and technicians in form of course tutors. All tutors are accredited trainers who are currently employed and up-to-date with Australian and international film and television industry standards. This carefully-curated network of experienced tutors is uniquely positioned to offer students access to rare and otherwise inaccessible networking opportunities.
Tutors at Screenwise include the following award-winning actors, among many others:
- Denise Roberts (Schapelle)
- Alan Flower (Catching Milat)
- Gary Sweet (House Husbands)
- Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Home & Away)
- Sara Wiseman (A Place to Call Home)
- Kristian Schmid (Packed to the Rafters)
- Simon Westaway (Underbelly)
The Screenwise Showreel Course is overseen by Denise Roberts (Wonderland, Schapelle, The Moodys, Cliffy, Mrs Biggs, Packed To The Rafters, Blood Brothers, Always Greener). Denise has been working as a professional Actor, Producer, Director, and Author for over 35 years. During this time, Denise has picked up accolades at every stage of her career, including an AFI Award, an International Variety Club of Australia Award, an ACCTA Nomination, 4 Silver Logie Nominations and more. So, you want to take that next step towards becoming a professional actor – or perhaps you feel you need to relaunch your career? Yet you don’t have the availability or the time to attend a full-time acting course? In that case, you’ll still need a professional showreel to help get yourself where you’re hoping to go. The Screenwise Showreel course is specifically designed for people who still want a break in the Film & TV industry, but don’t have the time to attend the formal full-time training such as our Diploma of Screen Acting.
That’s where the Screenwise Showreel Course comes in. The course has a strong appeal to students who are serious about acting and are seeking a high-intensity, challenging acting course. This one-year, part-time course combines first-class acting training by industry professionals with hands-on acting and networking opportunities. The final result is a state-of-the-art showreel on completion of the course, as well as the makings of a network who can help you get the exposure you need to jump-start your acting career.
In the final stages of the course, students prepare for their showreel shoot under the guidance of industry professionals. Course costs are all inclusive and cover tuition, showreel shoot, professional directors, editing and post-production costs.
The course is broken up into four terms, each of which is ten weeks in duration. During this time, students cover more than just showreel tips; they learn about all facets of film and television – drama, sitcom, comedy, presenting, auditions and characterisation – leading up to the final showreel shoot.
Term one teaches students to:
- Learn to open the channels of communication, broadening range and developing the voice.
- Explore the fundamentals of screen acting; improvisation, relationship and emotional articulation.
- Develop an on-screen personal presence and self-awareness through screen script analysis.

- Voice and standard accent development that meets professional and industry standards.
- Working with given circumstances, actions, intentions and objectives to examine character motivation.
- Understanding the important role that performance plays in delivering a clear, communicative and impactful message to an audience.
Term three branches out to cover:
- Confident application of voice and movement effectively in scene work.
- Refining screen acting technical fundamentals through the use of blocking, props and continuity.
- Scene compilation.
- Begin rehearsals for the formal showreel shoot.
The fourth and final term is an important one and includes:
- Production of showreel on location with two contrasting scenes. This showreel is professionally produced, shot, edited and directed.
- Confident application of audition and screen test techniques.
- Workshop with a Casting Director to walk through the expected etiquette of auditions and casting calls.
- Networking and self-marketing skills for actors.

The Audition Process
Auditions for the Screenwise Showreel course are held privately all year round for each intake; the bulk of auditions, however, are between September and early January (for our January intake), and between March and June (for our July intake). We would be happy to arrange online submissions for interstate applicants and those who are unable to make it into our studio for an in-person audition.
You will be required to demonstrate both of the following as part of your audition:

All applicants must be able to demonstrate:
- A sound foundational knowledge of English grammar and syntax.
- The ability to interact with others on a film/television set.
- A strong interest in professional film and television acting
- An ability to respond to instruction and accept constructive criticism.
- The financial capacity to meet the course requirements.
The audition process is designed to provide a learning experience to all applicants, as well as to determine whether the course is truly suited to their needs.
The Screenwise Showreel Course runs on a part-time basis; as such, students may choose either one full weekday class or two evening classes per week. Applicants may note their class preference at the audition; however, places are only confirmed once the deposit is received in full and on a first-come, first-served basis until classes are filled. Entry is by audition only.
Should you wish to book an audition with us, please contact our administrator by calling +61 2 9281 4484 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Many students secure jobs across both television and commercials while studying in the Showreel Course program. Students who fit the casting brief and who are not represented by an Agent are submitted for professional television commercials and small speaking roles whilst studying at Screenwise. We at Screenwise believe that networking and gaining industry experience while studying gives students a significant advantage over others when it comes time to make a full-scale entry into the industry.

Preparing for the Workplace
There are three key tools all aspiring actors need to successfully enter the industry: a showreel, a professional headshot, and a resume. Your resume should include your star turns (every role counts when building experience), as well as industry-vital statistics, such as your height and eye colour.
Beyond those essential tools, however, aspiring actors also need a fourth ingredient: exposure. There are multiple ways to get exposure. One important method is simply by taking on as many roles as possible and meeting people along the way. Another option is to start a blog on YouTube – many performers and actors have been discovered through the website.
Beyond the obvious benefit of emerging from the course with a professional showreel, exposure is another area where the Screenwise Showreel Course can offer a huge advantage. You will train under the guidance of award-winning actors and directors, all of which have extensive industry experience – and an extensive network, too. You will have the opportunity to build your network while studying so that you won’t need to start from scratch upon completion of the course.

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Screenwise and all its teachers for turning me into an actor and for giving me such a great Showreel. Acting and learning from this school has been the greatest pleasure of my life. I have loved being there every second and your course really nurtured my raw abilities which I plan to keep working on and will hopefully lead to bigger and better things. I wish you all nothing but the absolute best. Please do keep me in mind if you hear of anything that you think I’d be suitable for. Thank you again for everything.”
“Loved my classmates, loved my tutors, loved being at Screenwise. Thanks to all the staff at Screenwise, especially to Denise, Renee, and Katrina. But a special big thanks to you for your friendly face every Thursday and for all your help, advice and support over the past year. I’m tempted to say I will miss you all but I somehow think I will be back for various things. Denise warned us the year would go quickly and how so true that was. At an age where many are turning one eye to retirement, I feel like my life is just beginning. For the first time in my life, I am doing something I really want to do. In one sense I don’t care what the future will bring as I am already doing what I love. Thank you to Screenwise.”
